    The island is subdivided into seven propinsi (or provinsi; provinces)— North Sumatra (Sumatera Utara), Jambi, Riau, West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat), South Sumatra (Sumatera Selatan), Bengkulu, and Lampung —and the autonomous province of Aceh. The principal cities are Medan, Palembang, and Padang.
