During the 14th century B.C. a Hittite viceroy, usually a royal prince, was stationed at Carchemish in order to control Syria to the south. In the Neo-Hittite period (11th–8th century B.C.) the city reached its height, impacting the region especially through its school of sculpture.
The last important historical event in which Carchemish figured was the battle fought in 605 bce at which the Babylonian king Nebuchadrezzar II expelled the Egyptians from the area. Carchemish was defended by thick double walls with strong towered gates, and in the centre of town stood a high citadel overlooking the river.
Carchemish is now an extensive set of ruins (90 hectares, of which 55 lie in Turkey and 35 in Syria), located on the West bank of Euphrates River, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) southeast of Gaziantep, Turkey, and 100 kilometres (62 mi) northeast of Aleppo, Syria. The site is crossed by the Baghdad Railway that now forms the Turco-Syrian border.
