The vertebral column, also known as the spine, spinal column, or backbone, is a flexible hollow structure within which the spinal cord is located. It is composed of 33 small bones called vertebrae, which are separated by cartilaginous intervertebral discs.
Together, the vertebrae and intervertebral discs form the vertebral column. It is a flexible column that supports the head, neck, and body and allows for their movements. It also protects the spinal cord, which passes down the back through openings in the vertebrae. The adult vertebral column consists of 24 vertebrae, plus the sacrum and coccyx.
The vertebral column is a series of approximately 33 bones called vertebrae, which are separated by intervertebral discs. The column can be divided into five different regions, with each region characterised by a different vertebral structure.
There are around 50,000 species of animals that have a vertebral column. The human spine is one of the most-studied examples, as the general structure of human vertebrae is fairly typical ( homologous) of that found in other mammals, reptiles and birds.
