Penguins are actually carnivorous birds with piscivorous diets. Some species of penguins eat more fish than others. It all depends on their habitat and their body size. For instance, small Chinstrap penguins only consume around 10% fish in their entire diet, while large Emperor penguins eat around 90% or more fish.
The lifespan is typically 20 years in the wild, although observations suggest that some individuals may live to 50 years of age. Emperor penguins were described in 1844 by English zoologist George Robert Gray, who created the generic name from Ancient Greek word elements, ἀ-πτηνο-δύτης [a-ptēno-dytēs], "without-wings-diver".
The height of a penguin varies between species from 40cm (16 inches) to 115cm (45 inches). The average height of a penguin across all species is around 72cm (28.5 inches). The below table shows the heights of the main species of penguins measured to the tip of their beak.
Penguins live in some of the harshest climates, from the frozen plains of Antarctica to the equatorial heat of the Galapagos, and they immerse themselves in the ocean for months at a time. So it should be no surprise that they evolved a highly efficient protective layer that shelters them from the environment.
